Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100: 20% of 1,500 = 1,500 × 20 / 100 = 300.
How do I find what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 45 of 180 is 45 / 180 × 100 = 25%.
How is a percentage increase or decrease calculated?
(new − old) / old × 100. A flat price rising from $80,000 to $92,000: 15%. A fall from 1,200 to 900: -25%.
How do I add or subtract a percentage?
Add: Y × (1 + X/100) — 250 + 18% = 295. Subtract: Y × (1 − X/100) — 250 − 15% = 212.5.
Why does a 20% rise not undo a 20% discount?
The two percentages use different bases: 100 − 20% = 80, and getting from 80 back to 100 takes +25%.
