Frequently asked questions
How much does a ₾10,000 deposit earn?
At 10% a year for 12 months: ₾1.000 interest, ₾950 after the 5% tax. With monthly capitalisation — ₾992,48 net.
Is deposit interest taxed in Georgia?
Yes. Banks withhold 5% at source on interest paid to individuals and credits it net of tax. Compare deposits by effective yield, not by the headline rate.
What is capitalisation?
Accrued interest is added to the balance every month and earns interest itself the next month. At the same rate, capitalisation pays more than one payout at maturity.
Is my deposit insured?
Yes. The Deposit Insurance Agency covers all accounts of one depositor at one bank up to ₾30.000 in total — free and automatic (since 1 January 2024).
GEL or USD deposit?
GEL deposits usually pay several times more; USD and EUR pay less but carry no currency risk if your spending is in that currency (a flat priced in dollars, say). See the exchange-rate history.
