Frequently asked questions
How is car excise calculated in Georgia from 2 April 2026?
Engine size × rate: ₾1.5/cm³ for cars 0–6 years old inclusive, ₾4.5/cm³ above 6 (Tax Code, article 188). A 2.0-litre car from 2016: excise ₾9,000, import tax ₾150, total ₾9,150.
Do I pay VAT when clearing a car in Georgia?
No. Importing a passenger car (HS 8703) is VAT-exempt (article 173, sub-paragraph "z"). You may only meet 18% inside service fees.
What does customs cost for a hybrid or an electric car?
A left-hand-drive hybrid up to 6 years old gets 60% off the excise: 2.0 litres, 3 years — ₾1,200 instead of ₾3,000. Hybrids older than 6 get no relief. A left-hand-drive electric car is excise-exempt; right-hand drive pays a flat ₾3,000.
How much more does a right-hand-drive car cost?
The excise triples: ₾4.5/cm³ up to 6 years, ₾13.5/cm³ above. A converted wheel counts the same.
My car shipped before 2 April — do the new rates apply?
The old rates stay if transport started before 2 April 2026, proven by a bill of lading or CMR (overland: recorded with the Interior Ministry by 1 July). This calculator uses the new rates.
